The historic environment plays a key role in creating successful places. However, as Englands population continues to grow, there is increasing pressure to deliver more homes at higher densities, which must be carefully considered in this context. This study is undertaken by Arup on behalf of Historic Englands Strategic Research and Partnerships team, in order to improve understanding and decision making with regard to increasing residential densities in historic places. It involves a review of existing literature on density, placemaking and the historic environment, alongside a series of 10 in depth case studies which represent successful responses to providing increased residential density within a heritage context. The conclusions of this study aim to provide national and local decision makers with materials to support them in assessment of development proposals in historically significant places to ensure that developments can take place in ways that reflect their historic context and are sympathetic to their character.
