Canal and River Trust Portfolio of Grants for Programmes of Major Works
The Canal & River Trust is the guardian of a remarkable historic network of waterways and related heritage assets and buildings as well as operating two national waterways museums. We also look after 75 reservoirs, which are among the most costly structures that we care for. We have a legal duty to ensure they are maintained to a high standard. Many of our assets are more than 200 years old and we need to ensure that they are kept open and accessible to the public, so that everyone can enjoy and benefit from them. Historically significant, our engineered treasure is much more than relics of a bygone age. It remains available for anyone to find by our canals and rivers. In a survey in 2011, 90% of the British public agreed that canals are an important part of the nation's heritage. Our work has restored and rejuvenated much of it, making it accessible to the public in the guise of welcome stations, education and community hubs and through our museums and archives. However, there is so much more of our waterway heritage to save from extinction, disrepair, decline and decay.
